CHEN8102: Introduction to Rheology

3 Credits

This course will describe flow behavior of complex fluids from both a macroscopicexperimental point of view, in which we focus on characterizing nontrivial responses to stressand strain, and from a microstructural point of view, in which we focus on the microstructuraland molecular origins of observed behavior. Primary topics will include:• Linear viscoelasticity (dynamic response to varied types of small deformation)• Non-linear phenomena (non-Newtonian flow and nonlinear elasticity)• Phenomenological constitutive relations• Experimental methods for shear and extensional flow• Microstructural models of colloidal dispersions and polymer liquids
