This course examines family systems across the lifespan based on a variety of family theories, sociohistorical contexts (racism, oppression), socioeconomic conditions (social class), and diverse philosophies (culture). Specifically, it introduces students to diversity issues related to gender, class, ethnicity/race, sexual orientation, and culture, as well as emergent family forms (i.e., cohabitation, divorce, single parenthood, and remarriage) and healthy family functioning (couple communication, parent-child interaction, and coparenting) in the context of the latest research.
