FSOS5941: Families, Schools, and Communities as Interconnected Systems

3 Credits

Families and schools are dynamic systems that adapt and evolve over time. Systems are impacted by developmental and historical time, policy, social change, resources, and other contextual factors. Children often navigate both systems with different rules, expectations, and goals in each. How can families support the school as a system and vice versa? This question can be challenging and hard to answer but this course will explore how family systems, educational systems, and their various subsystems (such as teachers, parents, and children) influence one another. We will pay special attention to understanding how these interactions impact student outcomes, family engagement, and broader societal implications.
