In today’s digital and data-intensive era, geospatial technologies have become an integral part of everyday life. Searching for business locations and driving directions using web and mobile maps, or using location-based services offered with smart phones (e.g. Uber) has become routine. Geospatial technologies enable us to capture, store, process, and display a vast amount of geographic information about the Earth and the environment. The term Digital Earth is a visionary concept for creating a digital, multi-resolution, three-dimensional representation of the Earth, storing and managing access to geospatial data and everything that is known about the planet. This course primarily aims to familiarize students with the basic concepts of geospatial technologies and datasets used to create a Digital Earth. Students will develop skills needed to locate, gather, manipulate, process, visualize, and use geospatial data.
