GER 1003 is an intermediate-level course and the third semester of the four-semester German sequence offered at the University of Minnesota. With the main goal of helping you develop into a global citizen, this course engages you with authentic German materials to expand your vocabulary and learn new language structures. Using the textbook, Augenblicke: German through Film, Media and Texts, as well as additional materials, we will focus on three major topics in this course. Stories from the Past: We will read excerpts from stories written long ago (legends and fairy tales) and explore how the themes and characters in these stories still resonate with us today. We will learn some new verb tenses used in written stories and then write our own fairy tale. Civic Engagement: We will learn about German political parties, the rights and responsibilities of German citizens, and discuss different ways people are engaged in their communities. We will learn to write more complex sentences, which will be useful in the project at the end of the unit: a letter of application for international volunteer service. Green Cities: We focus on the effects of climate change on cities and the benefits of green spaces to mitigate associated health risks. We'll pay special attention to questions of social justice as we design our own community improvement projects and present them to the class.
