The Practicum in Long Term Care provides students with supervised, hands-on experience in an approved long-term care setting. Students apply leadership, management, and regulatory knowledge gained in coursework to real-world administrative practice. Emphasis is placed on developing competencies in organizational operations, staff management, quality improvement, resident-centered care, and regulatory compliance. Through guided reflection and mentorship, students integrate theory with practice, enhance professional skills, and prepare for licensure and leadership roles in long-term care administration. Students seeking the national Health Services Executive license must complete both their Bachelor of Applied Science in Healthcare Management and the Long Term Care Management Minor with a minimum of 1,000 hours in the practicum. Students seeking their state nursing home administrator license may be eligible to reduce the total number of practicum hours based on previous long-term care leadership experience and can request a reduction from the Minnesota state licensing board. Prerequisites: Because this practicum is a capstone course involving the application of knowledge and skills gained in all other coursework to solve real-world management problems, students should not take it until they have confirmed with their advisor that they have completed most of the core coursework toward licensure.
