PA5622: GAINS: Gender and Intersectional Network Series, Leadership Workshop

Achieving leadership parity entails individual, collective, and institutional change. GAINS: Gender and Intersectional Network Series is a leadership workshop that prepares students with the skills to lead effectively and challenge institutional norms and practices that perpetuate disparities based on gender, race, and other structural inequalities. This workshop-based course goes beyond ?lean-in? advice and examines intersectional (not just gender) inequalities; addresses structures of inequality (not just individual behavior); and guides students on their own journey to build a personal leadership mission rooted in their values. The course also supports students in building a personal "network of practice??because leadership is about building strong communities. Course pedagogy includes case studies, group discussions, self-reflection, and simulations that have been proven to have a lasting impact on individual leaders in developing their own leadership capacity. Guest speakers will offer potential role models and will share their leadership perspectives. The workshop format of the course allows students to benefit from a cohort model of learning and develop their own network of practice. This two-credit course is aimed at graduate students enrolled in UMN professional schools. Students of all genders and gender expressions interested in addressing personal and institutional barriers to advancement that are rooted in gender inequalities and their intersections with race and other forms of inequality are welcome to enroll.
