PE1014: Conditioning

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of personal fitness. Students will learn the principles of fitness, exploring the health and motor skill components involved. The course covers principles for designing practical training and conditioning programs, including strength training, aerobic and anaerobic exercise, flexibility, and other elements. Nutritional strategies for fueling exercise, promoting recovery, and maintaining a balanced lifestyle are examined. Students will gain knowledge about common fitness injuries and how to prevent them. The course emphasizes building motivation and consistency for adhering to fitness programs in the long term while managing stress. Through weekly workouts, readings, and assignments, students will actively apply course concepts. This includes fitness testing, goal setting, and creating an individualized fitness program tailored to one's needs and interests. Specific topics covered weekly include safety and form, muscular strength and endurance, cardiovascular exercise, high-intensity interval training, periodization, avoiding burnout, active recovery, the relationship between mental health and exercise, body composition, hydration, and maintaining motivation in exercise. By the end of the course, students will have the skills to develop and follow a well-rounded personal fitness program for lifelong health and wellness. PE classes involve a moderate to high level of energy expenditure and are considered moderately to highly intense. It is recommended that students be aware of their health status and any limitations that may affect their ability to participate safely in the physical activities involved in the course. If you have any questions about your health status, consult a physician for advice. You should also let the instructor know of any pre-existing health conditions before the first day of class and before participating in physical activities.
