PE1035: Karate

1 Credit

This course offers an introduction to the art and discipline of Traditional Karate-Do. Designed for beginners, it combines physical training with a holistic martial arts learning experience. Approximately 25% of class time is dedicated to lecture-based learning, while 75% focuses on hands-on skill development. Students will explore the history, philosophy, and customs of Traditional Karate-Do while learning foundational techniques, including stances, blocks, strikes, punches, kicks, and self-defense applications. Core components of the course include kihon (basic techniques), kata (forms), and kumite (partnered drills), with a special emphasis on kime (the focus of power), body dynamics, and breath control. Students will be required to learn and perform the katas Taikyoku Shodan and Heian Shodan, culminating in a physical examination that assesses both kata and self-defense proficiency. Each class includes warm-ups, technical drills, and sparring exercises designed to build flexibility, coordination, strength, and stamina. The course emphasizes personal growth, sportsmanship, and community building. No prior martial arts experience is necessary. This course is open to all students who are eager to learn, move, and grow in a respectful and supportive environment. PE classes involve a moderate to high level of energy expenditure and are considered moderately to highly intense. It is recommended that students be aware of their health status and any limitations that may affect their ability to participate safely in the physical activities involved in the course. If you have any questions about your health status, consult a physician for advice. You should also let the instructor know of any pre-existing health conditions before the first day of class and before participating in physical activities.
