PE1038: Tennis

This course provides an introduction to the sport of tennis, focusing on the development of fundamental skills, techniques, and strategies. Designed for beginners and those with limited experience, the course blends lecture-based instruction (25%) with hands-on practice (75%) to create an engaging and supportive learning environment. Students will learn the mechanics of all essential tennis strokes, including forehand and backhand groundstrokes (with topspin and slice), first and second serves, volleys, approach shots, lobs, and overheads. Instruction also covers footwork, court positioning, and strategies for both singles and doubles play. Emphasis is placed on rules, scoring, tennis etiquette, and injury prevention. Through a combination of on-court drills, individual coaching, and match play, students will improve their physical fitness, coordination, and mental agility. The course promotes sportsmanship, teamwork, and self-discipline, encouraging students to enjoy tennis as a lifelong recreational activity. As part of the broader Physical Education curriculum, this course supports personal growth and community building through active participation and shared learning experiences. You don't need any prior experience. The course is open to all students who are eager to learn, move, and grow in a fun and inclusive environment. PE classes involve a moderate to high level of energy expenditure and are considered moderately to highly intense. It is recommended that students be aware of their health status and any limitations that may affect their ability to participate safely in the physical activities involved in the course. If you have any questions about your health status, consult a physician for advice. You should also let the instructor know of any pre-existing health conditions before the first day of class and before participating in physical activities.
