PE1045: Rock Climbing

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of rock climbing in a safe, supportive, and controlled environment. Designed for beginners, it combines classroom instruction with hands-on climbing sessions to build foundational skills, confidence, and a strong sense of personal responsibility and teamwork. Students will explore the history and types of rock climbing, learn to identify and correctly use climbing equipment, and practice essential knots, anchor systems, and belaying techniques. Instruction also covers climbing movement, body positioning, bouldering, top-rope climbing, and strategies for assessing and managing risk. Emphasis is placed on outdoor ethics and environmental stewardship, helping students develop a respectful and sustainable approach to climbing. Approximately 25% of class time is dedicated to lecture-based learning, while 75% involves active skill development through indoor climbing and partner drills. By the end of the course, students will demonstrate proficiency in basic climbing techniques and safety procedures, effectively communicate and belay for a partner, and apply responsible climbing practices in various scenarios. As part of the broader Physical Education curriculum, this course promotes personal growth, sportsmanship, and a lifelong commitment to physical activity. No prior experience is required, but students should be prepared for moderate to high-intensity physical activity. PE classes involve a moderate to high level of energy expenditure and are considered moderately to highly intense. It is recommended that students be aware of their health status and any limitations that may affect their ability to participate safely in the physical activities involved in the course.
