PE1046: Tae Kwon Do

1 Credit

This introductory course offers students a comprehensive foundation in the Korean martial art of Taekwondo. Students will learn fundamental techniques, including stances, blocks, strikes, and kicks, as well as self-defense applications such as throws, takedowns, locks, and reversals. Training also includes the practice of patterns (hyung/poomsae), which integrate these movements into structured forms. In addition to physical techniques, the course explores the cultural and philosophical dimensions of Taekwondo, including terminology, etiquette, and the values of discipline, respect, and perseverance. Emphasis is placed on developing physical fitness, confidence, stress relief, and mental focus through consistent practice. Approximately 25% of class time is devoted to lecture-based learning, while 75% involves hands-on physical training. Students will participate in activities that foster sportsmanship, teamwork, and self-discipline, promoting a lifelong commitment to physical activity and personal growth. This PE course is open to all students and is designed for novices. No prior experience is required. PE classes involve a moderate to high level of energy expenditure and are considered moderately to highly intense. It is recommended that students be aware of their health status and any limitations that may affect their ability to participate safely in the physical activities involved in the course. If you have any questions about your health status, consult a physician for advice. You should also let the instructor know of any pre-existing health conditions before the first day of class and before participating in physical activities.
