PE1205: Scuba and Skin Diving

1 Credit

This course introduces students to the essential knowledge and skills required for safe and enjoyable recreational scuba diving. Designed for individuals who can comfortably swim a minimum of 400 meters on the first day of class, the course combines classroom instruction with pool-based training to build a strong foundation in both the technical and physical aspects of diving. Students will learn key scuba skills, including the use and maintenance of equipment, underwater breathing techniques, buoyancy control, safe entry and exit procedures, and emergency protocols. The course also covers dive theory, including the science of diving, the physics and physiology of pressure and gases, decompression principles, marine life awareness, and environmental stewardship. Successful completion of classroom sessions, pool requirements, and written examinations will prepare students to pursue open water certification. Emphasis is placed on safety, physical literacy, and developing skills that support lifelong engagement in scuba diving. As part of the broader Physical Education curriculum, this course promotes not only physical skill development but also personal growth and community building. Students will participate in activities that promote sportsmanship, teamwork, and self-discipline, cultivating a lifelong commitment to physical activity. Approximately 25% of class time is dedicated to lecture-based learning, while 75% involves hands-on physical skill development and practice. IMPORTANT: Students must be able to swim a minimum of 400 meters comfortably on the first day of class. Those who cannot complete this requirement will be required to withdraw from this course, but are encouraged to return once they have mastered this ability. PE classes involve a moderate to high level of energy expenditure and are considered moderately to highly intense. It is recommended that students be aware of their health status and any limitations that may affect their ability to participate safely in the physical activities involved in the course. If you have any questions about your health status, consult a physician for advice. You should also let the instructor know of any pre-existing health conditions before the first day of class and before participating in physical activities.
