PE1262: Marathon Training

This course is designed to prepare students to complete a full marathon (26.2 miles) through a structured, progressive training program. Emphasizing both physical and mental preparation, students will gradually build their running endurance over the semester, culminating in participation in a designated marathon race. Course content and assessments will cover topics such as physiological and psychological aspects of long-distance running, proper running mechanics, injury prevention, nutrition for endurance athletes, gear selection, and goal-setting strategies. Students will also explore the history and cultural significance of the marathon and develop personalized training plans to support their progress. Instruction combines classroom learning with hands-on training sessions, including weekly long runs, conditioning workouts, and recovery strategies. Students will also engage in peer support and group discussions to foster motivation, accountability, and a sense of community. To enroll, students must be capable of running 2 miles continuously at the time of registration and must follow a winter running plan to reach 6?8 mile runs by the first week of the semester. A medical physical exam is required. Students are responsible for registering for an instructor-designated marathon race and arranging their travel. An additional cost of approximately $100 covers supplies, a course t-shirt, testing, and hydration support. As part of the broader Physical Education curriculum, this course promotes physical skill development, personal growth, and community building. Students will engage in activities that foster sportsmanship, self-discipline, and a lifelong commitment to physical activity. Approximately 25% of class time is dedicated to lecture-based learning, while 75% involves hands-on physical training. The course is open to all students who meet the prerequisites and are eager to challenge themselves and expand their knowledge. PE classes involve a moderate to high level of energy expenditure and are considered moderately to highly intense. It is recommended that students be aware of their health status and any limitations that may affect their ability to participate safely in the physical activities involved in the course. You should also let the instructor know of any pre-existing health conditions before the first day of class and before participating in physical activities.
