This course will guide students through learning experiences rooted in the daily work of a pharmacist in order to build knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed for patient-centered, team-based care. Each Area of Science is represented with emphasis on developing and integrating knowledge to evaluate the scientific literature, explain drug action, solve therapeutic problems, and advance population health and systems of care. This module applies core pharmaceutical science concepts to medication-related problems to formulate medication therapy problems and care plans for patients experiencing health-related issues appropriate for self-care and describes how the intricate medication supply chain, distribution process, and insurance system of the US healthcare system impacts pharmacy practice. Students will develop knowledge and skills necessary to accomplish pharmacist tasks involving: preventable disease, pediatrics, gastrointestinal related conditions, allergic rhinitis, and asthma.
Prerequisites: First-year PharmD student, successful completion of Phar 6511, 6512 and 6513.
