Students will learn the social, psychological, biological, and cultural factors of individual and group development as applied to social work practice, explore behavior and life-cycle development on diversity and each stage of life, and discuss development in terms of the individual and in terms of overlapping social systems.
This foundation course covers the Human Behavior in the Social Environment (HBSE) component of the MSW curriculum. It examines socio-psycho-biological factors associated with individual and group behavior, and development?in interaction with the environment?as they underlie social work practice. Key themes include: that development occurs throughout the life cycle, from prenatal through old age; behavior reflects both internal (organismic) and external (environmental) influences; understanding human behavior and the social environment is central to achieving the social justice that is a primary goal of the profession.
