Beginning through advanced analysis of jazz repertoire from harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic perspectives. Harmonic analysis will focus on chord construction and movement between chords. Melodic study looks at classic improvised solos through transcription and analysis. Rhythmic analysis includes stylistic differences between different recordings from different periods. As jazz was originally passed down aurally, ear training and aural exercises are embedded into the entire curriculum.
Undergraduate prerequisite: MUS 1502 and MUS 1512 with grade of at least C- or higher
graduate prerequisite: MUS 3508 and MUS 3518 with grade of at least C- or higher, or passing score on tonal entrance exams.
