POL3752: Radicals, Moderates, and Vendidos: Chicano/a Politics

This course will explore the theory and practice of Chicano/a political activities in the U.S. through social science methods of inquiry. The formal political system will be analyzed in relationship to the experience of Mexican and broader U.S. Latino/a origin community members, as will other forms of political engagement. These activities include voting, the actions of elected officials, legislation, campaigning, public policies, activism, and social movements. Analysis of Chicano/a political activity and its relationship to U.S. Latino/a civic action will be grounded in an experience of unequal power relations, racial and ethnic institutional exclusion, economic exploitation, and the attempt to achieve social justice.
